Cairo's Egyptians took the diamond in 1897 as part of the Central League, bringing Class C baseball to the southern tip of Illinois. Nestled where the Ohio meets the Mississippi, Cairo was a river town that punched above its weight. Minor league ball gave that small community something to rally around when the century was still young.
