Kona Kai Chateau stood along Route 24 in Union, New Jersey, part of the Polynesian restaurant wave that swept suburban America through the 1960s. Tiki bars like this one turned ordinary intersections into tropical escapes, complete with mai tais and carved totems. Some towns never quite got over losing theirs.
