New Recreation Alleys anchored 918 G Street in downtown Washington, D.C., likely opening in the 1940s when bowling surged as America's favorite pastime. G Street was the city's commercial spine, alive with theaters, shops, and nightlife. Lanes like this gave government clerks and working families a reason to linger downtown after dark.
