The Outrigger at Laguna Beach's Surf & Sand Hotel was a cornerstone of Southern California's tiki culture during the 1960s and 70s, when Polynesian-themed establishments were transforming the American hospitality scene. Nestled along the pristine coastline of Laguna Beach, this tropical oasis offered guests an exotic escape complete with bamboo décor, rum cocktails, and the soothing sounds of the Pacific just steps away. The establishment became synonymous with the laid-back beach culture that defined Orange County during the golden age of tiki bars, when every major hotel seemed to have its own slice of synthetic Polynesia. As part of the broader tiki movement that swept across California in the post-war boom, the Outrigger represented the era's fascination with island culture and the promise of perpetual vacation. Part of our Vintage Tiki collection, celebrating the defunct golden era bars of yesteryear.
The Details:
The design features "Outrigger" in large casual script lettering above "LAGUNA BEACH AT THE SURF & SAND HOTEL" in smaller all-caps text, with "HYatt 4-8568" positioned below in matching typography. A detailed vintage resort illustration dominates the center, showcasing a multi-level beachfront hotel building with distinctive architectural elements and surrounding palm trees rendered in hand-drawn line art style. Green tropical foliage elements (palm fronds, leaves) frame the left side of the composition, creating a two-color screen print aesthetic with blue ink for text and building details paired with green botanical accents in authentic 1970s-80s vacation resort poster style.
