Cedar Rapids fielded its first professional ballclub in 1890, when the Blackbirds took the diamond in the Illinois-Iowa League. Minor league baseball was still young then, and small Midwestern towns measured their pride by the nine men they sent out each summer. Teams like this one laid the groundwork for over a century of ballgames along the Cedar River. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
