Cooleemee fielded a Cards squad in North Carolina's Class D State League during the 1937 season. A tiny mill village with barely a thousand souls, it proved that small-town devotion to baseball ran deep across the Carolina Piedmont. Some communities were too proud and too stubborn not to have their own team.
