Duluth's Whalebacks took the diamond in 1891 as part of the Western Association. Named for the distinctive whaleback ore freighters crowding the harbor, the club wore a port city's identity on its sleeve. Minnesota's iron range was fueling a nation, and Duluth had a ballclub to match its ambition. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
