Tommy Lee's Islander on Pacific Avenue in Stockton stood as a temple to mid-century Polynesian escapism. Opening during the tiki bar craze of the 1950s and 1960s, it transported Central Valley regulars to a world of rum drinks and tropical fantasy. Places like this weren't just bars, they were portals to somewhere far away.
