Lowell's Chippies took the field in 1888 as part of the New England League, representing a proud Massachusetts mill city during baseball's earliest professional era. Before the modern game took shape, clubs like these were the sporting soul of their communities. Working-class fans in Lowell claimed the Chippies as their own.
