Mount Vernon's Kings took the diamond in 1949 as part of the Class D Southern Illinois League, bringing organized baseball to a proud coal country town. Small-market clubs like these were the backbone of the minor league system in postwar America. They gave southern Illinois something to rally around on warm summer nights. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
