Aloha Room at Portland's Heathman Hotel was a midcentury escape into Polynesian fantasy. Opening in the 1950s, it joined the tiki bar wave sweeping American cities, turning downtown Portland into a tropical refuge. Places like this gave post-war America permission to dream in orchids and rum.
