Westchester Bowl anchored Thirtieth Street in Bakersfield through the postwar decades, when bowling alleys doubled as neighborhood social halls. Opening in the 1950s, its Duck Blind cocktail lounge kept the drinks cold between frames. Lanes like these defined California leisure before the suburbs moved on.
