Woonsocket's Speeders took the diamond in 1914, bringing Colonial League Class C baseball to a Rhode Island mill town hungry for something to cheer about. Before radio or television, small-league clubs were the cultural pulse of working communities. Brief or not, they mattered to every person who showed up.
