Wonder Bowl opened in 1959 in Downey, California, as the neighborhood's living room with thirty-two lanes. Southern California had hundreds of bowling alleys, but few held a community together the way Wonder Bowl did. Some places outlast trends because they mean something to the people who grew up inside them. Part of our Vintage Los Angeles collection, featuring the iconic local landmarks of yesteryear.
The Details:
Circular signs mounted on radiating poles spell out "WONDER" above "BOWL" in a vintage lollipop-sign arrangement, with lines fanning outward from a central point below. Two light blue diamond shapes flanking the center each contain crossed white bowling pin outlines. Cursive script reads "Downey, California" above clean uppercase text reading "ESTABLISHED 1959."
