Belleville's Stags played Class D ball in the Illinois State League starting in 1947, representing a small town's hunger for professional baseball in the postwar years. Minor league clubs like this one gave returning servicemen and local kids something to believe in on warm summer nights. Southern Illinois never forgot what that diamond meant.
Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
