Cleveland's Bearcats took the field in 1914, part of a wave of independent and semi-pro clubs that defined Ohio baseball beyond the major leagues. In a city already devoted to the game, these smaller teams gave working neighborhoods their own squads to rally behind. They carried Cleveland's fierce baseball identity at the grassroots level.
