Columbus fielded a scrappy minor league club in the Southern League starting in 1896, deep in the heart of Georgia's baseball country. Class D ball was where small towns poured their pride into nine innings on a summer evening. Teams like the River Snipes gave Columbus something to rally around long before the modern game forgot places like it.
