The Hawaiian Cottage brought a slice of Polynesian paradise to suburban Cherry Hill in the 1960s, transforming Route 38 into an unlikely gateway to the South Pacific. This Continental-Polynesian restaurant became a beloved fixture in South Jersey's dining scene, serving exotic cocktails in carved tiki mugs while families gathered around tables adorned with bamboo and tropical blooms. During the height of America's tiki craze, when escape to faraway islands felt just a mai tai away, the Hawaiian Cottage offered locals their own tropical retreat without leaving New Jersey. The restaurant embodied the era's fascination with Polynesian culture, creating an authentic tiki bar experience that transported diners from the Garden State's highways to an imagined island oasis. Part of our Vintage Tiki collection, celebrating the defunct golden era bars of yesteryear.
The Details:
Bold sans-serif text reading "Hawaiian Cottage" dominates the design alongside smaller text stating "RESTAURANT," "ROUTE 38," "CHERRY HILL, N.J.," and "CONTINENTAL-POLYNESIAN Cuisine" in mixed script and block lettering. A central stylized tiki mask rendered in white and red features geometric tribal patterns, carved facial details, and traditional Polynesian design elements. Palm fronds and tropical foliage graphics flank the tiki figure, creating a vintage mid-century restaurant advertising aesthetic with high-contrast red and white ink.
