La Crosse claimed its place in organized baseball when the Pinks joined the Wisconsin-Illinois League in 1908. Class D ball meant small towns and smaller crowds, but it gave river cities like La Crosse a stake in the national pastime. Clubs like the Pinks were the foundation minor league baseball was built on.
