Miami, Arizona was copper country, and when the Miners joined the Arizona State League in 1928, they carried that blue-collar grit onto the diamond. Small mining towns across the Southwest fielded teams that meant everything to communities built on hard labor. Baseball gave those miners something to cheer for beyond the next shift.
