San Francisco's Hot Peanuts took the field in 1894 as part of the California Players League, a brief but defiant experiment in independent baseball. During an era when organized ball was tightening its grip, clubs like this one gave Pacific Coast players a league to call their own. They burned bright and brief, the way grassroots baseball often did.
