Manhattan's Stork Club, born during Prohibition in the 1920s, became the most exclusive nightclub in New York City by the 1940s and 1950s. East 53rd Street was where society columns were written in real time. Celebrities, politicians, and socialites passed through its velvet rope, making it the unofficial gateway to American high society.
