The Tropics Motor Motel & Restaurant stood as Modesto's premier tropical escape along McHenry Avenue during the golden age of California's tiki culture in the 1960s and 70s. This Central Valley oasis transported weary travelers and locals alike from the agricultural heartland into a Polynesian paradise, complete with exotic cocktails and island-inspired cuisine. As part of the nationwide tiki craze that swept America during the post-war boom, establishments like The Tropics offered middle America a taste of the exotic South Pacific without leaving the mainland. The combination of motor lodge convenience and tiki bar atmosphere made it a unique destination that embodied the adventurous spirit and optimistic escapism of mid-century California culture.
