Toledo's Avengers took the diamond in 1885 as part of the Western League, representing a city already deeply rooted in organized ball. Northwest Ohio was fertile ground for minor league pride in the late nineteenth century. Clubs like the Avengers gave Toledo a place in the broader story of America's game before the modern era took shape.
