The New York Gothams joined the National League in 1883, playing their home games at the original Polo Grounds in Manhattan. Founded by tobacco magnate John B. Day, the club quickly rose to prominence in professional baseball. By 1885, the team adopted a new nickname, eventually becoming the legendary New York Giants we remember today.
Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
The Details:
"NEW YORK CITY" sits in distressed serif uppercase, followed by "GOTHAMS" in large hollow block letters with a hand-drawn irregularity, then "National League" in italic cursive script. A weathered illustration of an 1880s baseball player mid-swing occupies the center, with "1883" in serif type and a decorative ribbon scroll reading "BALL CLUB" beneath. Heavily aged grunge texture throughout gives an authentic late 1800s ephemera feel.
