Ottumwa fielded the Coal Palaces in 1890, one season in the Illinois-Iowa League under a name borrowed from the exhibition hall that drew crowds to town that year. Southeast Iowa dug coal for a living, and the ballclub carried that pride onto the diamond. Short-lived teams like this one gave mining towns a summer identity worth remembering. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
