Billingsley's Outrigger brought authentic Polynesian dining to the artistic shores of Laguna Beach during the height of the tiki craze in the 1960s. Located at the iconic Surf and Sand resort, this tropical oasis transported guests from the California coastline to an imagined South Pacific paradise with bamboo architecture, exotic cocktails, and traditional island cuisine. The restaurant became a beloved destination where beachgoers could transition seamlessly from sun and surf to rum punches and pupu platters. As one of Southern California's premier tiki establishments, Billingsley's embodied the postwar fascination with Polynesian culture that swept across the American dining scene. The Details:
White vintage Hawaiian design featuring "BILLINGSLEY'S" in bold sans-serif lettering as the central focal point, with "Polynesian Cuisine" in elegant cursive script above and "Outrigger" below, all enclosed within an ornate bamboo-style rectangular border with decorative cross-tie corner elements. The composition centers around a stylized surfboard or outrigger canoe silhouette containing a geometric diamond logo, while "AT THE SURF AND SAND" and "LAGUNA BEACH, CA" appear in smaller block text beneath the frame. The entire design employs a clean white ink treatment with sharp linework that captures the retro tiki bar aesthetic through its combination of tropical typography styles and Polynesian-inspired decorative framing.
