Providence claimed its own diamond squad when the Clamdiggers took the field in 1891 as part of the Eastern Association. Rhode Island already had deep baseball roots, and this club carried the grit of a working waterfront city into every game. Some teams fade from the record books but never leave the soil they played on. Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
